Sushi Mambo
Let me start by saying I LOVE GROUPON. I go to A LOT of restaurants and try new places to eat all of the time and its all thanks to this amazing website/app. This time I had the great opportunity to go to Sushi Mambo in Washington Heights and I was excited because I have been eyeing this place for a while! My neighborhood is full of amazing places to eat and I can say I've been to almost all of them. So, for those who don't know me, I'll tell you now, I hate sushi. I tried liking it years back and I just don't like the seaweed taste or the raw fish thing. But, with this new Latin-Asian fusion stuff going on in the culinary world I have found a way I can love sushi, and sit beside my sushi loving friends. Sushi Mambo is located on 202nd street and what's amazing about this little place is the chef is the son of the first generation of Japanese people whom immigrated to the Dominican Republic. (Fun fact!) Which means the sushi is made with some of my favorite things from my culture like platanos, queso frito, salami, yucca and other traditional sushi ingredients as well. The Groupon was Food for Two or Four at Sushi Mambo (Up to 50% Off). A.k.a. $20 for $40 worth of food (not including drinks) and that's great! I love a good deal, especially on food! Joanna and I ordered an appetizer, two different kinds of rolls, and one side dish which equalled exactly $40. We made reservations for 7:30pm which was just in time for happy hour and our drinks were $10 combined! (Definitely going back for happy hour!)
The decor was really cool. There were a lot of plants and mood lighting. I liked that it was really colorful.
I ordered a vodka pineapple and Joanna got the margarita which were both on great happy hour deals.
Calamari is our go-to appetizer and these fried calamari were so good! They were perfectly crispy and came with a side of chipotle miso aioli which was perfectly spicy. I could eat these all day!
Joanna ordered the Morir Soñando fusion roll which had shrimp tempura, longaniza guisada, fried cheese, sweet plantain, guacamole, and chips. Beautiful presentation! She said it was delicious!
I ordered El Ninja which had chicken tempura, salami guisado, tostones, sweet plantain, and avocado. These rolls were a little bigger than traditional, but so delicious! My favorite thing in the world are platanos and this had maduros AND tostones!!
Let me tell you about this yucca mash... It's the best yucca mash we've ever had!!! It was so buttery, smooth, and salty. Mmm!
I had such a great time at Sushi Mambo and I really hope to return! Especially for those happy hour deals! Make sure you go check it out in Washington Heights!
