HUNGRY IN HEELS

The M.C. Escher Exhibit & Experience

An opportunity arose where I could fangirl over one of my favorite artist as a kid, M.C. Escher, one of the world's most famous graphic artists. He challenged my way of thinking and made me want to get better at drawing in pencil. Till this day it's my favorite medium to use. He used flawless shading to create many optical illusions and played with depth of field, repetition, and reflective surfaces.

"M.C. Escher, during his lifetime, made 448 lithographs, woodcuts and wood engravings and over 2000 drawings and sketches. Like some of his famous predecessors, - Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Dürer and Holbein-, M.C. Escher was left-handed. Apart from being a graphic artist, M.C. Escher illustrated books, designed tapestries, postage stamps and murals. He was born in Leeuwarden, the Netherlands, as the fourth and youngest son of a civil engineer. After 5 years the family moved to Arnhem where Escher spent most of his youth. After failing his high school exams, Maurits ultimately was enrolled in the School for Architecture and Decorative Arts in Haarlem." - www.mcescher.com

The M.C. Escher Experience at Industry City was such a treat. It was larger than I expected and had many interactive elements. The flow of the exhibition was really cool, there was a good mix of still and interactive, and the rooms and spaces were very thoughtfully designed. Almost the entire Exhibit included lithographs but I was able to find a few charcoal and crayon drawings. I got to see so many of the pieces I was in awe of as a kid; it was so surreal seeing them right there in front of me. There were even opportunities to get pictures taken as some of his work!

From pencil, to crayon, to lithograph:

I had an amazing time at the M.C. Escher Exhibit & Experience at Industry City! It's extnded to May 26th if you're interested in still going. I will definitely be going back for their ever-changing exhibits and beautiful outdoor space. Also thanks for checking out this post, more art adventures coming soon!
