HUNGRY IN HEELS

Walking Through Pixel Forest

Pipilotti Rist: Pixel Forest at the New Museum was an exhibition worth seeing-- or should I say experiencing. Now, I'm no art critic so I won't analyze it and tell you what everything means but I can tell you how the art pieces made me feel. Mixed media installation art is my favorite type of art; extra brownie points if you make it interactive. Pixel Forest was everything I'd hoped it would be and more. When you walk into it, you're just immersed in sound, light, space, and texture. The smooth music relaxed me, the lights excited me, and the videos intrigued me. The way the lights would change depending on the scenes in the videos was magical. There was a section of the room with cushions on the floor where you can just sit/lay and take it all in from a different perspective. I walked around the whole room and admired the space from all angles. The "pixels" were strung from the ceiling and created this almost jellyfish atmosphere in the room.

On the next floor, there were beds scattered around with two abstractly shaped screens up above. Two videos were being projected onto these screens while people watched from below and music played. I liked the ambience of this room. I didn't lay on the beds because, you know, bed bugs, lice, fleas, germs, etc. But it was a really beautiful sight.

I'm really glad I went to experience this at The New Museum before it was over. I hope to visit this museum more in the future!
