DIY Bookmark
I haven't done a DIY in forever! Here's a super quick tutorial on these DIY bookmarks I love to make out of things lying around the house or things I collect from the city. Supplies: Magazines, Brochures, Textured Paper or Patterned Paper Tape Scissors Pen Ruler
The inspiration for this came from a bookmark I made for myself out of a MoMA Brochure I picked up from a stand one day. Starry Night is one of my favorite paintings and the brochure was a nice cardstock weight, so instead of buying a new bookmark, I decided to make one! My bookmark is 1.5in by 8in but you can make it any size depending on the height of your book. I personally like when the bookmark is taller than the book so that it sticks out the top a little. There are very few and simple steps. 1. Find an image you like from a newspaper, magazine, brochure, or catalog 2. Pick a focal point in the image and draw a rectangle around it 3. Cut out the rectangle (or if the paper is really thin I like to fold the page accordion style) 4. Tape all the edges for a nice smooth finish That's it! If the paper is too flimsy I like to put a piece of cardstock or something I got in the mail to put in between to make it sturdier.
Here's a Lion King bookmark made from an advertisement in Time Out NY Magazine:
My original bookmark that I used as a stencil next to the new one.
This is a catalog that I get from New York & Company regularly. It's a nice weighted cardstock so it makes a great bookmark.
I fold it then cut off the excess edges.
Tape those edges down and viola!
This is another page in Time Out Magazine that showcased neon signs found in NYC.
This ended up being my favorite one and it is made out of a really cool illustration in Time Out Magazine about food! I was able to utilize the entire drawing for the front and back of the bookmark.
For this one I put 2 pieces of the New York & Company catalog inside to make it sturdier then taped up the edges for a clean seal!
Final products!
Bookmarks in action!
Bookmarks that didn't make the cut (pun intended).
Thanks for checking out this DIY! I hope you enjoyed it and are inspired to make ones of your own!
